Big hair, classic tunes and sunshine – the perfect equation for raising money

12th August 2019

Helping other people is meant to be the key to finding true happiness. After volunteering for Child Bereavement UK at Let’s Rock on Clapham Common with my colleague Dawn on Saturday 28th July, I wholeheartedly agree! The sunshine and the 80s music from bands like Go West, The Boomtown Rats and UB40 created a brilliant atmosphere, with everyone determined to relive a bit of their youth and dance the day away.

We helped out by checking tickets on the door and selling raffle tickets. Our bright yellow Child Bereavement UK t-shirts made us feel instantly part of the occasion and left people in no doubt about who we were supporting. It was brilliant to get such a positive reaction from everyone we spoke to and they were only too happy to give a little back to help those going through much darker times.

We’ve been working with Child Bereavement UK for about the last year and a half. As our main product, School Fees Insurance, is all about providing parents with peace of mind to know that their children’s education will be protected no matter what the future might hold, it was a natural fit. One of the toughest aspects of my role is speaking to parents who have recently lost their partner. Being able to signpost the fantastic services that Child Bereavement offer right across the country to bereaved families makes having those conversations just a little bit easier.

Over the last 18 months, we’ve worked with Child Bereavement UK in a number of ways. As a small business we’re not cash rich, but what we do have is lots of enthusiasm and our staff feel a close connection to the charity and its work. Little things like sharing their message across our social media channels, giving away their literature on our stand at conferences and using their cards to send out at Christmas all make a difference and helps to raise awareness about the vital support they offer. This year, we’re offering our time to help them raise money. I think we definitely lucked out helping at Let’s Rock. Another colleague is running in the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October, which sounds like much harder work!

I’m really pleased that we helped to raise £3,957.17, beating last year’s total. I know that money will help people who really need support at a time when their whole world has been turned upside down. Volunteering for just a few hours will help change lives and we got to enjoy a bit of 80s nostalgia along the way. Feels like a win-win situation for everyone involved!
