University Student Personal Possessions Insurance

A university student personal possessions scheme covering possessions both on and off campus.

A comprehensive, all risks annual policy covering all your personal possessions, including laptops, ipods and mobiles in your room at university or in rented accommodation; at your permanent home address; on the journey to and from university or college in a train or car; plus those things that you would normally carry around with you. You are insured against them being damaged in a fire, flood, or other natural calamity, or if they are accidentally damaged or stolen.

How much am I insured for?

We believe that £3,000 should cover most universty students. However if you have any individual items valued at over £500 you must specify them on the application form. These might include expensive sports or musical kit, a top-end iPod, or other music system, or a bike (for a small additional premium). Although the policy does provide insurance cover for one laptop and one mobile phone, you must specify them on the application form. If you don't we cannot cover them.

Student Personal Possessions
SFS Group offers a comprehensive university student personal possessions insurance policy that will cover almost every eventuality.
The all-risk annual policy covers all personal possessions up to the value of £3,000 for
students studying at university. Whether staying in halls of residence, a rented flat or even when back at home visiting the family, your belongings are covered.
The policy even covers your items when you are travelling between university and home. Products such as iPods, laptops, jewellery and mobile phones are all covered in the event of them being damaged in a fire, flood or any other kind of natural disaster. They are also protected against theft and accidental damage. Even cash is covered if you have your purse or wallet stolen.

Why do I need insurance?
Students are taking more and more expensive items with them to
university, with the likes of laptop and tablet computers fast becoming the norm. Mobile phones are becoming increasingly sophisticated as expensive smartphones such as the iPhone or Blackberry become the standard for any tech-savvy young person.
Social networking on sites like Facebook and Twitter is growing fast and is being increasingly seen as an everyday essential as important as the telephone, making a computer with an internet connection a must-have for students.
Students, away from home often for the first time in their lives, can be particularly vulnerable and make easy targets for thieves. Many
parents, meanwhile, do not always realise that their children are walking around with costly gadgets on them that are uninsured. Depending on the policy, home insurance does not always cover student personal possession while children are actually away at university.
Higher education is already pricey, with
university fees, rent, travel cost and general outgoings making forking out to replace a lost, stolen or a damaged laptop an unnecessary extra expense.

What the experts say
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) urges students and parents to ensure that steps are taken to properly cover possessions at university. There are sometimes obvious gaps in home insurance cover, which is why Biba advises going to a specialist student insurance group, such as SFS, which can offer a solution that that will be tailored to the needs of students.
Biba also points out that students are often guilty of undervaluing their belongings, which it says can lead to items not being adequately covered.

Why choose SFS Group cover?
All personal possessions up to a total of £3,000 are covered by the policy whether they are on or off campus or locked in your own or somebody else's car.
One Mobile phone and one laptop is covered, but must be specified when taking out the policy. Items over the value of £500 must also be specifically named if they are to be protected. SFS will also allow a bicycle to be added to the scheme for a small extra cost.
Up to £100 worth of items that you carry around in a handbag or backpack are included, in addition to your mobile phone. This also includes £40 of cash, but not credit cards as the provider of these will cover you in the event of fraudulent use.
Items belonging to the university or a landlord, such as furniture, are covered by the policy in the event of accidental damage, up to a maximum of £1,000.
University fees can be reimbursed up to a maximum of £2,000 in the event of illness or accident preventing attendance at classes for more than one term.
In addition, the policy includes £10,000 in the event of accidental
parental death to help cover the financial assistance they may have provided.
