Britain to become 'world class' in education
Posted on 22nd June 2007
Chancellor Gordon Brown has outlined his vision for the UK 's education sector in a speech at the Mansion House.
Claiming that the country's first priority ought to be to ensure the UK becomes "world class in education", Mr Brown said that there was currently a great deal of "untapped" potential.
"I am passionate about education because I want a Britain where there is no cap on ambition, no ceiling on talent, no limit to where your potential will take you and how far you can rise," he remarked.
To achieve this standard, Mr Brown proposed the creation of a National Council for Education Excellence to bring together members of the business, higher education and schools sectors.
In related news, Anthony Seldon, head of Wellington College, recently told the Guardian that schools had "replaced education with instruction", rather than dedicating themselves to the personal, social and emotional development of pupils.
