UK pupils 'facing exam stress'
Posted on 19th June 2007
Hundreds of thousands of youngsters in the UKUK are facing stress because of their GCSE and A-level exams, it has emerged.
Expert George Turnbull of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority said that over a million children are facing stress this summer brought on by the tests.
The increasingly taxing nature of exams is partly attributable for the rise in stress, said Mr Turnbull, who is regarded as the exams doctor, appointed to answer queries that parents and students have over the period.
"Pupils get pressure to do well from their schools because the schools themselves depend on good results to do well in the league tables," he remarked.
He advised youngsters to take regular study breaks, rather than sealing themselves up in a room, which can increase stress levels.
According to the International Stress Management Association, confiding one's fears in another person and keeping results in perspective are two ways to battle stress caused by exams.
