MP proposes mentor system for over-16s
Posted on 25th May 2007
A government MP has introduced a bill aiming to provide all pupils in post-16 education with a mentor aimed to help further their educational development.
Labour MP Barry Sheerman, chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee, saw his bill receive its second reading last week, and said that he sought to bring about a scheme that would be "focused on the individual".
The initiative also allows for a personal profile of achievements to be introduced, aiming to make pupils more able to demonstrate the skills they have acquired during their time in the education system.
"We need a system that is geared towards the individual," Mr Sheerman advised, saying that the availability of a mentor would provide a "vital" service to pupils considering their educational options regarding further education.
Earlier this month Mr Sheerman warned the government that its plans to overhaul the examination system must be able to be successfully implemented straight away or else run the risk of failing young people.
