Currently the subject is only offered by the OCR exam board, which had announced that it was to abandon the course from 2008 onwards. But the weight of opinion expressed in favour of keeping the qualification has now led to a reconsideration, OCR has announced.
Last week students protested outside the House of Commons in an attempt to stop the proposed alterations to the curriculum, where they were joined by toga-wearing shadow education minister Boris Johnson.
Schools minister Lord Adonis also said that he was against the decision to scrap the subject.
In response, OCR has said that it will look to rework the course, currently studied by just 530 students nationwide, into one that is more enticing to pupils.
"We have had quite a demand, mainly from the teaching community, who really want the qualification to continue. We are now working with the Joint Association of Classical Teachers to make the qualification more attractive," a spokeswoman commented.
The exam board said that the original proposals only ever reached the consultation process and had not been finalised.
