Independent schools 'to show contributions to UK education'
Posted on 22nd May 2007
The new Charities Act requiring charities to show that their status is both necessary and deserved will enable the independent sector to advocate the benefits it provides, it has been claimed.
Nigel Richardson, chairman of the Headmasters' and Headmistress' Conference, has said that the sector's role as "an engine of social mobility" – one in four children in the sector comes from an average or below-average income postcode area – will be highlighted by the new regulations.
The likes of means-tested bursaries will serve to aid such initiatives, Mr Richardson suggested.
"The Charities Act may well give the sector a strong context in which to advance the arguments for its continuing existence and strength," the chairman outlined in a written statement on the eGov monitor website.
Mr Richardson has advised separately that schools themselves are increasingly functioning as family units for their pupils.
