Students who do not take out cover for their belongings or who consider themselves to be covered on their parents' policies are creating a false economy, it has been advised.
Attempting to save money by avoiding such costs could lead to more harm than good, NatWest media relations manager Mary Taylor has advised.
"It is dangerous for students to assume that their belongings are covered by their parents' household insurance. With the average student taking over £3,000 worth of possessions with them to university, the final bill to replace goods could stretch their financial resources to the limit if adequate insurance isn't in place and they experience a burglary," Ms Taylor revealed.
Safeguarding the likes of expensive electrical equipment would be "a small price to pay" in light of such concerns, she added.
The comments come as a survey from British Gas found that almost a quarter of students admitted that they would not feel the need to report the smell of gas in their accommodation to their landlords.
