MPs urging caution over Diploma initiative
Posted on 18th May 2007
MPs have urged the government to take its time in rolling out the new Diploma qualifications for fear of confusing schools and students alike.
The qualification aims to combine traditional class-based learning with more vocational roles which emphasise the importance of work experience.
Diplomas will be available in varying degrees of difficulty, with some corresponding to as many as three A Levels.
Five subjects will initially be available via the scheme, but MPs have suggested that a more obvious demarcation between different subjects is required.
"It is far from clear those in charge of developing the different Diplomas share a common understanding of the kinds of learning they will demand and the purposes they will serve," a report from the Education and Skills Committee has stated.
The changes are part of a wide-ranging initiative that will also increase the availability of the International Baccalaureate and see A Level questions become more taxing.
The Independent Schools Council has previously given its backing to an earlier blueprint for change on which the Diplomas are based.
