The current GCSE and A-level systems need to be updated so they showcase the full potential of pupils, a new report has suggested.
Backed by the government, the study revealed that in their present format, the tests do not allow students to demonstrate their range of knowledge.
It criticised multiple choice exams in particular, saying they do not give pupils the chance to exercise their use of the English language.
"Even the most able teachers cannot deliver their best unless empowered by curricula and assessment that are both fit for purpose," the report stated.
It added that scientific subjects in particular - namely chemistry and physics - are not structured in a way which demonstrates the full potential of those sitting them.
During the last academic year, 52.3 per cent of entries from Independent Schools Council establishments were awarded the top A grade, significantly higher than the national average of 26.7 per cent.
