Children must learn communication skills at home
Posted on 8th February 2010
For Student/Child
It is important for parents to make sure their children are able to communicate properly before they go to school, it has been said.
Sue Fieldman, regional editor of the Good Schools Guide, believes that schools should be the secondary place where children learn to build on these skills.
"It is what the children learn at home and communicate at home that is the crucial element to learning how to interact with society," she suggested.
Parents need to encourage their children to interact with others, Ms Fieldman recommended, rather than letting them sit at a computer all day.
A recent report from I CAN found that the communication ability of 50 per cent of all zero to 11-year-olds causes concern for parents.
Currently, more than 18 per cent of pupils over the age of 16 attend private schools, statistics from the Independent Schools Council show.
