There has been yet another rise in the number of applications to university, the latest figures show.
The University and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) revealed that applications are up by nearly a fifth compared to last year.
So far, more than 570,000 students are in the running for places, although the official closing date is not until June.
At the same stage in 2009, around 100,000 fewer applications had been received by Ucas.
Ucas chief executive Mary Curnock Cook told the BBC: "There are some systemic changes affecting the figures but we could also conclude that the current economic situation is causing people to apply to higher education as a way of re-training."
She also indicated that the rise in applicants meant both higher education establishments and individuals would face tough times over the coming months.
Statistics from the Independent Schools Council show that 93.1 per cent of its leavers continue on to higher education.
