One university has called on its students to make sure they have cover in place to protect their belongings, following a spate of thefts.
In 2009, 258 thefts were reported at the University of Maine, with the fitness centre one of the main targets for those thinking of stealing articles.
Associate dean of student affairs Kenda Scheele said: "The biggest thing in these theft cases is not to be a victim.
"These are crimes of opportunity and not everyone on campus is part of our community."
The university has reiterated the need for people to take out students personal possessions insurance and for pupils to make sure they do what they can to deter thieves.
It also urged people not to rely on cameras to keep an eye on their items, as they are for "safety rather than security".
Students in Cambridge may particularly need to be on their guard as it was recently named the bike theft hotspot of the UK.
