More needs to be done to close the ever-growing education gap which exists between boys and girls, it has been said.
Speaking to the Independent, childrens minister Dawn Primarolo revealed that schools need to get creative when it comes to teaching boys how to read and write.
With double the amount of boys struggling with literacy skills than girls, she advised that roleplay could be one means of improving standards.
She suggested that traditional materials may not be sufficient, recommending that using sand - or even chocolate - to inspire boys to write could prove worthwhile.
It was recently identified that smaller class sizes can have a positive impact on childrens education.
Figures from the Independent Schools Council show that the ratio of teachers to students currently stands at 9.5:1.
Furthermore, teacher turnover for this year has remained relatively consistent at 12.9 per cent in like-for-like terms.
