The Independent Schools Council (ISC) has welcomed moves to establish standards and carry out inspections of British schools overseas, suggesting that this would give official recognition to the high standards of teaching on offer.
It hopes many independent schools will sign up to the process, announced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) at the Council of British International Schools Conference last week.
The ISC has been campaigning for an inspection and standards scheme for several years in order to assure parents they can rely on overseas schools, just as they can independent schools in the UK.
Such schools "make a significant contribution to the UK economy, as well as to the diversity and quality of our research and higher education, and to the UK's future global influence," explained ISC chairman Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas.
The Independent Schools Inspectorate reports to the DCSF on whether British schools meet statutory requirements and has applied to carry out inspections of overseas schools.
