Parents are sending their children to state and private schools at different periods of their education, it has been claimed.
The recession has hit the ability of some families to be able to pay school fees for the entirety of the leaning process, the Good Schools Guide asserted.
A number of youngsters are heading to government-funded facilities at primary and junior level, with independent schools used for the latter part of knowledge acquisition, said regional editor of the information portal Sue Fieldman.
"What they are doing is providing for the short term, but keeping their options open if things improve for the long term," she explained.
Ms Fieldman is "not surprised" there is a greater demand for state education places this year, a fact that was outlined in a recent Local Government Association report.
One in five councils has reported increased pressure on applications for schools in the first half of 2009.
Some 13 per cent of respondents believe this situation could worsen as a result of the recession.
