Independent schools in the UK have evolved to meet the needs of the modern world, it has been noted.
In a letter to the Financial Times, headmistress of Roedean School Frances King stated that these institutions have adapted with the times.
She stated that the modern boarding school helps students prepare for a future in which they will be "comfortable with a wide variety of cultures".
This is one reason why international students fit in well into private schools in the UK, she noted.
"Students come to the UK looking for education relevant for the 21st century: dynamic, challenging, demanding and richly diverse, and many of our schools provide this," Ms King added.
The headmistress was writing in response to a letter published in the paper recently, which claimed that independent schools are becoming saturated by "the children of wealthy foreigners".
David Lyscom, chief executive of the Independent Schools Council, recently urged institutions in the sector to encourage applicants from overseas to help them survive the economic downturn.
