Parents' judgement can be clouded by the huge amount of information now available to them about education, it has been argued.
Writing in the Telegraph, president of the Girls' Schools Association and principal of Cheltenham Ladies' College Vicky Tuck suggested that mothers and fathers are being "swamped" by the amount of information with which they are confronted.
The independent school headmistress argued that many parents feel that it is necessary to "take account of their child's views at every turn".
However, sometimes this is not the appropriate thing to do, noted Ms Tuck.
Instead, she commented, parents and teachers alike must trust themselves to make "informed and sensible choices".
This includes narrowing down a choice of schools before getting the child involved in the process, she stated.
Ms Tuck recently argued that the future of education lies in single-sex schooling, suggesting that boys and girls learn best in different manners.
