Eton College unveils new bursary plans

Eton College has unveiled a ten-year timeframe in which to raise enough money to fund a merit-based entrance system.
The prestigious independent school will have to raise hundreds of millions of pounds to be able to ensure that pupils from all backgrounds will be able to attend.
Provost of the college Sir Eric Anderson wrote a funding request to alumni noting that it is hoped that enough money can be raised to "ensure that any boy
will not be debarred for lack of money".
The college's timeframe is more ambitious than that set by St Paul's recently, which aims to reach a similar status in 30 years, by raising at least £200 million.
This ten-year goal is "aspirational" rather than school policy, noted Eton's headmaster Tony Little, who is retiring in January.
It is also "a farewell flourish to rally the troops", he added.
A group of private schools in London recently took out an advertisement in newspapers based in the capital to publicise the availability of bursaries.
