Schools around the country have won praise after it emerged that adopting a number of methods used by private schools is leading to success.
The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) has praised institutions for implementing changes such as extending school days, introducing Saturday classes and using a house system.
Chief executive of the organisation Elizabeth Reid argued that this is symptomatic of a "quiet revolution" that is occurring in schools.
This is being led by "dynamic headteachers and school leaders", she stated, adding: "Their work is going a long way to help many more young people fulfil their potential."
According to a survey of 400 schools conducted by the SSAT, 24 per cent have Saturday classes, while the same figure run longer school days or intend to start them soon.
Former schools minister Lord Adonis recently called for more maintained schools to follow the example of independent schools by adopting cadet schemes.
