Leader of the Liberal Democrat party Nick Clegg has condemned state school education and suggested that he may send his own children to a private school.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Mr Clegg described London state schools as "clearly having a problem".
He added that "a lot of committed, aspirant parents" will send their children to a state primary school but will then "flee in large numbers from the state sector at the secondary level".
The father of two boys, with a third child expected by his wife Miriam, Mr Clegg said he could not rule out paying for his children's education at an independent school in the future.
Antonio, six, and Alberto, four, currently attend a Roman Catholic primary school.
These comments follow news that many state schools may soon offer boarding facilities due to £10 million of government funding for the initiative, in a move that will mirror private school tradition.
