An independent school in Scotland has become fully co-educational, welcoming girls at all levels for the first time in 184 years.
Edinburgh Academy is now welcoming members of the fairer sex into both its junior and senior school.
This follows the announcement about the change made in 2006 by the private school.
Rector Marco Longmore praised the change, telling the Herald: "It provides the natural setting for young people to be educated alongside each other and in groups, having friendships and preparing them for life beyond school."
Children at the school also told the paper about their excitement about the adjustment to co-educational status.
The move leaves only around ten single sex schools remaining in Scotland, the publication reports.
Last term independent school Our Lady's Abingdon in Oxfordshire announced that it was becoming co-educational from the coming school year, welcoming boys into its classrooms for the first time since 1860.
