The academies programme should be extended with the development of schools "akin to private schools", a government minister has stated.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, junior schools minister Andrew Adonis stated that demand from parents and local authorities is likely to see the expansion of the scheme beyond its 2011 target of 400 schools.
And he has now called for the new academies to follow the style of the independent sector by introducing 12-hour days, a broad curriculum and strict disciplinary codes.
He noted that this should help push results up at the partially privately-funded schools, amid news that there has been an improvement of GCSE results at twice the rate of the national average at academies.
Last month Lord Adonis told the Financial Times that he is keen to develop the independent European School Culham as England's first multilingual academy.
