Independent schools in Scotland aim higher

Independent schools in Scotland achieved huge successes in this year's Higher results, it has emerged.
Figures released by the Scottish Council for Independent Schools (SCIS) have revealed that almost half of pupils at private schools in the country gained an A grade in the exams.
And this marked an increase of two per cent on last year, up from 47 per cent to 49 per cent, the Scotsman reports.
While Higher pass rates have remained stable at 90 per cent, the overall pass rate for Advanced Highers was on the increase, with a year-on-year growth of one per cent to 88 per cent.
Director of SCIS Judith Sischy told the paper: "These results reflect the purposeful learning environment that is part of the ethos in an independent school, encouraging pupils of all abilities to progress without disruption and to aspire to succeed."
The overall pass rate for Highers in Scotland rose to 73.4 per cent this year, up from 71.7 per cent in 2007.
