Private schools may be right to be wary of diplomas

Leading private schools appear to have had their decision to reject the government's new diploma system backed-up by a top union leader.
Andrew Broadhurst, who heads the teacher's union Voice, told the organisation's annual conference that many teachers do not fully understand the new system, the Guardian reports.
"Students are being sold the diploma courses by staff who themselves have little understanding of what's involved," he commented.
Mr Broadhurst blamed the government for failing to properly inform teachers, describing the implementation process as "haphazard at best".
Perhaps pre-empting this, top independent schools including Wellington College and Brighton College have said they will opt out of the diploma system for the time being.
Many of these schools are pursuing academically elite qualifications such as the Cambridge Pre-U and the International Baccalaureate instead.
According to the Guardian, a report from the London University's Institute of Education warns that enforcing the diploma system could widen the gulf between state and private education.
