The Independent Schools Council (ISC) has welcomed the government's announcement that it has reviewed plans concerning the registration and inspection of independent schools.
Addressing the House of Lords during a debate on the education and skills bill, junior schools minister Andrew Adonis announced that the schools secretary will retain responsibility for the registration and regulation of private schools.
This is rather than transferring this to Ofsted, as had been proposed.
Changes were made following extensive consultation with the independent sector.
"We are delighted that the Government has listened to the views of ISC and so many schools, who value their direct link to the Secretary of State. The current system works well and schools saw no case for change," said chairman of ISC Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas.
The ISC is currently contesting adjustments to Charity Commission guidelines, which could see private schools lose their charitable status if they fail to show that they are helping less advantaged people in the local community.
