New figures reveal fees at private schools have risen at twice the rate of inflation over the last five years.
Released by Halifax, the statistics indicate that since 2003, independent sector fees have risen by 40 per cent.
But in this time, the retail price index has gone up just 18 per cent.
The bank collated figures from the Independent Schools Council census and the Office for National Statistics.
And it found that despite the fee increases, more parents than ever before are choosing to send their children to private school, with 5.6 per cent more at the institutions than half a decade ago.
This compares to state schools, which have had a 3.4 per cent drop in enrolment over the same period.
Parents' prospects of finding a bursary to fund the private education of their children could be increased if schools adopt a system devised by high master of St Paul's School Martin Stephen, it was reported recently.
