The government could risk causing the development of a "fractured two-tier education system" if it fails to reconsider its plans for the diploma, it has been suggested.
Following a consultation with businesses across England, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has concluded that Labour must avoid being "over-ambitious" in its plans for the new qualification.
It has stated that companies have raised concerns that if the diploma is seen to be less respectable, private schools will either retain the current system or turn to the International Baccalaureate, thereby creating a divide between the state and independent sectors.
Rather than adding value to the education system, the diploma could create an "unnecessary distraction", argues the CBI.
And it notes that there is need to ensure the availability of resources as well as streamline the process before implementing the scheme.
