A private school head has defended the sector against its traditional "toff" image and dismissed comments made by the former Independent Schools Council (ISC) chief.
Writing in the Guardian's Comment is Free, headmaster of Wolverhampton Grammar School Dr Bernard Trafford, argued that the divide between the state and independent sector is "a lot narrower than has been claimed".
Speaking in response to comments made by the former chief executive of the ISC, Chris Parry, Dr Trafford noted there is "certainly no cold war", something that Mr Parry suggested existed as a gulf between the sectors.
He added: "Most people in the independent sector share my respect for our maintained sector colleagues and my contempt for the way government micromanages and over-controls it."
Mr Parry resigned earlier this month after he sparked controversy with a number of comments about the state sector in an interview with the Guardian.
