Parents who want to enrol their children in private education but are suffering from the effects of the credit crunch should ensure they explore the possibilities of scholarships and bursaries.
This is according to advice published in the Guardian today.
It cites figures from the Independent Schools Council, which state that some financial assistance is provided to one-third of private school pupils.
While bursaries are means-tested, scholarships are awarded based purely on academic, musical, art or sporting merit.
Furthermore, the paper notes, grants at some schools are sometimes provided to the children of members of the armed forces, as well as the clergy and teachers.
According to Halifax figures published by the paper, the average cost of sending one child to a private school in 2007 for a year was £9,627, rising to £20,970 for a year at a boarding school.
Sainsbury's Finance recently reported that it predicts an increase in applications for loans to fund private school fees with the increasing cost of education.
