Military should seek specialist insurance, says expert

Higher premiums and a lack of competitive choice means that members of the military should "seek out a specialist provider" for their insurance, said an independent financial adviser.
Investment director at Buckles Investment Services Richard Eling also noted that army personnel should ensure that the cover they purchase is right for their specific sector.
"If you are a diver in the Navy or a bomb disposal officer in the army or the RAF - various other specific roles would need an even more specialist policy," he stated.
Mr Eling said that those who serve in the armed forces will have higher premiums and therefore must seek a specialist provider for their life insurance, adding "If you read the small print of your life insurance policy, war is up there with acts of God, so a standard policy won't cover those things."
According to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, 176 British soldiers have lost their lives since the start of the war in 2003.
SFS Group has been providing a specialist life and critical illness insurance for parents whose children are at fee paying schools since 1990 without treating armed forces personnel any differently to civilians.
To us, it does not matter whether you are Special Forces, Logistics, Aircrew or a Nuclear Submariner. Nor does it matter to us if you are serving in Bulford or Basra, Hounslow or Helmand. It does not affect your premiums.
There are no pre-medicals and no lifestyle questions - the only declaration you need to make is any pre-existing medical conditions that you have had in the last 5 years.
So long as your children are in fee paying education when you join the scheme, it will pay all school fees up to their l8th birthday, if the insured member of the armed forces dies.
This cover is provided whether that death occurs on operations, in a road traffic accident, during training or through a terminal illness.
The school fees even go direct to the school, so that the remaining parent is not bothered with all the administration. We take care of that. Peace of mind in an uncertain world.
