Plans to help state schools in Haringey meet government targets set this week are due to include a twinning programme with a local independent school.
According to the Hornsey Journal, the Hornsey academy Greig City will be working with a private school to help develop an action plan for school improvement.
Education professionals in the north London borough have hit out at the government for plans announced this week to issue an ultimatum to failing schools to improve standards over the next four years or face closure and transformation into an academy.
Schools secretary Ed Balls noted that under the National Challenge programme, he wants to see all schools reach the target of 30 per cent of pupils achieving five good GCSEs including English and maths by 2012.
Four schools in Haringey are listed on the government's hit list. But teachers have complained that the objective is too arbitrary.
Headteacher of Woodside School Joan McVittie told the paper: "A raw score like 30 per cent is not helpful or useful."
New guidelines introduced by the Charity Commission mean that more independent schools will have to work with less privileged schools if they want to retain their charitable status.
