Phonics a success says Ofsted
Posted on 9th May 2008
The recommended phonics method of teaching reading is proving to be a success, Ofsted inspectors have reported.
Inspectors also found that young children were enjoying their phonics lessons.
A second report published by the Institute of Education found that children in the Every Child a Reader programme were getting higher than average results for their age and that the gender gap was closing.
Now the government has announced that it is on track to ensure that the 30,000 children struggling with basic literacy will receive intensive support by 2010.
Schools minister Andrew Adonis said: "Through our literacy programmes we are making huge strides in getting those children who are really struggling up to the same standard as their peers by the time they are seven years old."
The Every Child a Reader programme was designed to support the bottom five per cent of children aged between five and six who are struggling with learning to read.
