Private head supports academies
Posted on 8th May 2008
The head of a private school has called on others to back an academy schools programme, The Argus reports today (May 8th).
Head of Brighton College Richard Cairns said all schools had a duty to provide education to children about the current conflicts around the world.
He told The Argus that people were still "ignorant" of the conflicts going on, over which they had no control and that this failing must be addressed. Academy schools were a step towards this, he said.
Mr Cairns said: "Conversations with my brother [who was serving in Afghanistan] in his more serious moments have served as a constant reminder to me this year of the things that are going on in our world today."
In April it was reported that the renowned independent school Wellington College had received government funding to provide an academy for children.
Around 40 per cent of the children would have parents in the military, as the site in Andover in Hampshire is surrounded by several military bases.
