Fewer maths teachers being trained
Posted on 8th May 2008
A survey has found that the shortage of qualified maths teachers is set to get worse.
Education Data Surveys discovered that only 2,000 maths teachers are likely to be trained this year and that number will be reduced next year.
Soon there will not be enough trainees to fill the advertised vacancies in schools.
Professor Howson who conducted the analysis said: "Once again the government's failure to recruit enough trainee maths teachers means that some schools will be short of properly qualified teachers."
He added that parents should be asking what the government is doing about the issue.
The government must ensure that every school has its share of qualified maths teachers, he said. He added that focusing on "so called poor teachers" would not disguise the fact that it had "continually failed" to provide enough teachers.
In April, the National Union of Teachers went on strike in a row over pay. It argued that low pay increases was turning graduates off joining the profession.
