Parents 'dumping' children in school
Posted on 7th May 2008
A teaching union has accused parents of dumping their children in school for up to ten hours a day.
The leader of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) told a union conference in Liverpool that these parents were "abdicating their responsibility".
Mick Brookes went on to say that there were some mothers and fathers who did not understand what good parenting involved.
"These parents dump their children early in the morning and are late picking them up. We do believe some are abdicating their responsibility to their children," he said.
However, children's minister Beverly Hughes called his comments "unhelpful" and "untrue".
She said that although the views of headteachers were important it was not the only perspective and parent's views were important as well.
Today (May 7th) the Mail reported that the government will launch a new scheme that will send mothers and fathers hints and tips on parenting via text message.
