Oxford comes out on top
Posted on 1st May 2008
Oxford has topped the Guardian's university league tables, just a few points ahead of rival Cambridge.
This year the competition for top spot was even tighter, with eight institutions falling within less than three points.
The report is compiled from the results of the National Student Survey, reflecting what the students themselves rate as best in higher education.
Oxford came first, followed by Cambridge, London School of Economics, University of Warwick, St Andrews and Imperial College London.
The league tables also allow perspective students to see which universities came out on top for specific subjects.
In engineering Teesside University came first, while dance and drama education got top marks at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, famously founded by Sir Paul McCartney.
The admissions service Ucas reported in April that applications to universities had gone up by six per cent since 2006 but had not surpassed last year's figures.
