Private school pupils show environmental initiative
Posted on 29th April 2008
Pupils at a private school in Bristol have been taking part in a Carbon Challenge Roadshow.
A team from BP's Enterprising Science presented the roadshow at St Ursula's School, which included pupils from years seven to 11.
The day was designed to encourage pupils to examine the carbon footprint left by their school and how it could be reduced.
Three workshops, the Environmental Strand, Economic Strand and Social Strand, were set up to further illustrate where carbon emissions originated from, how they could be reduced and how people could be encouraged to get involved.
Pupils then made a series of pledges to help the school become more environmentally-friendly, including walking or cycling to school, turning off lights in favour of natural lighting, switching off appliances, doing less photocopying and recycling.
Head of science at the school Mrs E Edmunds told Private School News: "The activities allow for both those of lower ability to be stretched and for the most able to be stretched as well."
