More children aiming for university
Posted on 28th April 2008
A poll has found that more children want to go to university, despite admissions this year being down.
Three out of four of the young people polled by education charity the Sutton trust said they would like to go into higher education, the highest number in five years.
Student loan repayments and fees did not deter pupils, with only 13 per cent saying they were worried about debt.
However, four out of ten school pupils said they were not receiving enough information about higher education.
Chairman of the Sutton Trust Sir Peter Lampl said: "While it is encouraging that three-quarters of young people aspire to university, less than half that number currently end up in higher education."
He said that it was important for schools to provide advice and information from "primary school upwards".
The admissions service Ucas reported last week that applications to universities had gone up six per cent since 2006 but had not surpassed last year's numbers.
