Help for children who stammer
Posted on 28th April 2008
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has announced that a centre that helps children who stammer will receive £340,000.
Secretary of the DCSF Ed Balls said the money would go towards providing schools with information, advice and training materials on how to best help children with the speech impediment.
The Michael Palin Centre is a world leader in the field and will begin the introduction of its information programme by 2010.
Ed Balls said that the training would help schools to better understand the condition of stammering and help their pupils.
Michael Palin said: "Their [DCSF] support for the work, backed up by generous investment, is wonderfully encouraging news for those who stammer and those who seek to help them."
It has been estimated that approximately five per cent of children experience a level of difficulty with fluency at some point during their speech development and that stammering can have a major impact on both their academic and social lives.
