Thousands of teachers rally across UK
Posted on 24th April 2008
As around 8,000 schools witnessed teachers walking out as part of today's (April 24th) strike, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) has warned that there could be further industrial action.
Teachers are protesting over a pay dispute. The first NUT-organised strike in 21 years is a reaction to three years of pay awards that came below the level of inflation. The union says this is having an adverse effect on the number of teachers joining the profession and staying on.
Over 1,000 teachers have joined a rally in London to march to Westminster and there are over 50 more rallies going on across the country.
Acting secretary of the NUT Christine Blower said: "Teachers do not take the decision to strike easily, or lightly, but teachers' patience has been stretched to the limit."
She added: "You cannot run a world class education system if teaching doesn't attract enough graduates. It is time for the government to listen."
