Government to rethink head teacher pay
Posted on 21st April 2008
The schools secretary has said that the government will go ahead with its plans to rethink head teacher salaries.
A review could lead to bonuses and rewards for head teachers as part of an ongoing initiative to entice people to the role.
The reassessment follows a report from the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) which said that the current pay structure was confusing and inconsistent, exposed employers and heads to risk and posed the threat of inequity, the BBC reported.
Currently, head teachers' salaries are determined by governing bodies and can range from anywhere between £34,938 and over £100,000.
Schools secretary Ed Balls told the Times: "I would like to see top rewards for the best head teachers so that they can deliver rising standards for all children and spread the benefits of their experience to other schools in their area."
At the beginning of the month, the National Union of Teachers criticised a recommendation from the STRB to introduce greater performance-related pay for head teachers and said that the role must be made more "attractive".
