College lecturers to join strike
Posted on 15th April 2008
College lecturers have voted to join the forthcoming teachers' strike over pay.
Members of the University and College union (UCU) will support members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) who voted to walkout for one day on April 24.
The UCU has reported 65.5 per cent support for the strike action from the 250 colleges balloted and 86.2 per cent support for other forms of industrial action.
General secretary of the UCU Sally Hunt said that lecturers were feeling undervalued, despite receiving recognition for the work they do by the government.
"The considerable difference in the average pay of lecturers and teachers doing the same work is grossly unfair," she added.
She went on to call the treatment of lecturers a "scandal".
Last week, Teachers TV produced a tribute to Steve Sinnott, who died in early April. Mr Sinnott was general secretary of the NUT when strike action was first proposed.
