Tesco studies to be added to geography syllabus
Posted on 15th April 2008
The exam board OCR has proposed adding the study of Tesco as part of its contemporary makeover of the geography GCSE.
Geography students will be able to study the impact the supermarket giant has on the high street if the proposal goes ahead.
Pupils will also be able to learn about "pressing issues of the 21st century?, such as the effects of climate change and national disasters like last year's flooding.
Head of OCR's GCSE project Parool Patel told the BBC: "The physical and geographical challenges facing the wider world have drastically changed in recent years."
It has also been reported that Tesco is to introduce its own degree in shelf-stacking.
The two-year Tesco Retail Foundation degree will involve learning about display design and efficient shelf-stacking. Tesco hopes the course will be recognised as the national qualification for store managers.
Campaign for Real Education's Nick Seaton told the Sun: "It is further dumbing down of university education."
