CCTV cameras may be installed in exam halls in an attempt to prevent cheating, the BBC has reported.
The move comes as part of the Examination Officers' Association's (EOA) crackdown on hi-tech cheating.
Tackling the problem of exam cheats has already led to exam papers being tagged and papers being checked for plagiarism online.
Chief executive of the EOA said that the plans were a way of exploring an "interesting solution".
Andrew Harland said: "Our suggestion is that we could use this technology and that it could help both sides."
However, he added that there were fears students would be put off by the thought of being stared at.
General secretary of the Association of Schools and College Leaders John Dunford told the BBC: "If a pupil knows CCTV cameras are around, it's like slowing down for a speed camera on a main road; it acts as a deterrent."
A report in March by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority found that there had been a 60 per cent rise in the number of students taking their mobile phones into exams.
