GCSE in figure skating and folk dancing proposed
Posted on 9th April 2008
GCSE PE has been expanded for 2009 to include sports such as figure skating, folk dancing and snowboarding.
A draft by the exam board OCR has laid out the new options of approved sports for pupils to take as part of the internal assessment section of the qualification.
Other sports that will be approved by the exam board include trampolining, Tae Kwan Do, roller dance and hill walking and campcraft.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, winner of ITV's 2007 Dancing on Ice Kyran Bracken spoke in favour of the revamp. "Dancing on Ice showed me that ice dancing is an incredible way to keep fit while having an enormous amount of fun," he said.
Another proposal by the exam board includes revising GCSEs by replacing the end-of-year exams with modules. This would allow pupils to retake individual modules.
However, when the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority surveyed people about the proposed changes to the exam assessment, they found that only 43 per cent could not see a problem with splitting it into modules, the BBC reported.
