Parent's views on commercialism "vital" says minister
Posted on 8th April 2008
Academic experts will speak to children and parents about their thoughts on commercialism, as part of the government's Children's Plan.
The decision follows the publication of a public opinion poll in February.
The poll, published by the Children's Society, found that the majority of adults felt that commercialism was 'damaging' children's well-being.
Ninety per cent of those polled also said that commercial advertising aimed at children leading up to Christmas put extra financial pressure on the parents and 89 per cent of adults felt that today's children were more materialistic.
Secretary of state for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls said: "Parents have already told us through our Time to Talk events around the country that they're concerned consumerism is skewing our children's values and aspirations."
Mr Balls said it was "vital" that parents and teachers came forward in order to produce an informed view of the impact commercialism had on children.
