NUS 'no longer calling for free education'
Posted on 4th April 2008
The National Union of Students (NUS) has voted to drop the notion that they only support free education.
As the costs of university continue to rise, the union will instead lobby for the financial burden on graduates to be reduced.
"The majority of us want to have a real and serious voice in the fight for a fairer funding system," newly-elected president Will Streeting told the Guardian.
"If you refuse to discuss anything other than abolishing fees you are selling students out by not having an influence."
University fees are currently capped at £3,300 but this could rise in 2009. A recent report from the Higher Education Policy Institute said that the cap could be raised to £7,000 a year.
A study from the Association of Investment Companies revealed last year that many students and their parents underestimate the cost of university, with students graduating with £5,000 more debt than anticipated.
