Posted on 26th March 2008
Students at state and independent schools in York have joined together to take part in an archaeological dig at Hungate.
Pupils from Archbishop Holgate's CE School and The Mount girl's school have teamed up with the York Archaeological Trust and the city archives, the York Press reported.
The dig is part of an initiative between private and state schools to help teenagers improve their understanding of applied sciences, particularly gifted and talented pupils.
Annette Aylett, the project's coordinator, told the newspaper that there are 18 pairs of teachers taking 18 classes which will focus on the application of science skills in five areas; health, society, the humanities, art, and the creative industries.
"The idea of the project is that this is an exchange of best practice between all of York's secondary schools and York College - the most gifted teachers working with the most gifted pupils," she added.
Politicians are is trying to encourage more schemes like this one across the UK, where private and state schools can share skills and resources.
