Private schools 'offer more science subjects'
Posted on 15th February 2008
Children who attend private schools are far more likely to be able to study a range of science subjects than those who are state-educated, according to the Conservatives.
An analysis of government figures by the party found that while the majority of state schools only offer combined science GCSEs, two-thirds of independent schools allow pupils the chance to study separate science subjects, reports the BBC.
As a result, privately-educated children are four times more likely to study all three science subjects - chemistry, physics and biology - as separate GCSEs.
Shadow schools secretary Michael Gove claimed state-educated pupils could find they have no access to some technology careers as a result of their limited opportunities to study sciences at school.
"Some of the best degrees and best paid jobs require separate sciences," explained Mr Gove.
Figures compiled by the Independent Schools Council show that more than 80 per cent of applications for places on science and technology degree courses at Russell Group universities from pupils attending its member schools were successful last year.
